Why This Community?

In the U.S. Virgin Islands, communities face extreme environmental and health inequities, disproportionately impacting residents. Relentless hurricanes strip away infrastructure, leaving little time for recovery. This isolated region relies on costly imports for food, has limited local production, energy monopolies, and profound healthcare shortages. Virgin Islanders deserve an opportunity for change—a chance to create resources, build knowledge, technology, economic security, and heal their environment.

The Founder's Story

Founded by an immigrant from Trinidad & Tobago who was told college was out of reach, but persisted through 32 years of public service helping thousands of students in the Virgin Islands earn diplomas and pursue their dreams. In 2019, the Center for Educational Growth, Inc. (CFEG) was established to ensure no student is ever turned away from their potential—offering the first virtual and in-person educational pathways in the Virgin Islands.

Film Over Gun Violence Program

CFEG Educational & Creative Arts Initiative

Award Winning

The Center for Educational Growth (CFEG) empowers youth in the U.S. Virgin Islands through innovative education and creative arts programs that address pressing social issues. The Film Over Gun Violence Program (FOGV) exemplifies CFEG's mission by using the art of filmmaking to confront the impact of gun violence while amplifying the voices and stories of Virgin Islanders.

Program Overview & Approach

CFEG provides rolling enrollment for high school diplomas, vocational programming for career and workforce development, and access to digital technology for education. As an internationally accredited institution, CFEG's mission is to allow students and families from all walks of life and smaller Island or geographical areas the power of "Direct Your Learning."

The FOGV program combines humanities education, advocacy, and technical training in filmmaking to create a safe space for youth to express their experiences, explore their identities, and engage with their culture. The program incorporates trauma-informed practices and addresses intersectional barriers victims of violence face, including limited access to mental health services, systemic marginalization, and cultural stigmas.

Short-Term Objectives (1-2 Years)

Primary Objectives
  • By December 2025, equip 20 students with technical skills in filmmaking, storytelling, and advocacy to create films addressing the social impact of gun violence
  • Increase awareness through five community film screenings and discussions by February 2026, while producing two new films written and produced by students
  • Partner with at least three local organizations to provide wraparound services, counseling, and mentorship. Provide 5+ students with jobs in the film industry and decrease gun violence rate by 10% to save 1-4 lives in 2026
Key Activities
  • Training & Workshops: Deliver interactive workshops on scriptwriting, cinematography, acting, and editing with professional-grade equipment
  • Cultural Storytelling: Guide students in crafting narratives that reflect their unique cultural identities and lived experiences
  • Community Engagement: Host public film screenings and panel discussions to showcase student work and foster dialogue about gun violence
  • Partnerships: Collaborate with up to 5 organizations like Blue Tarp Productions, CMCArts, and local counseling services for comprehensive support

Long-Range Plan (3-5 Years: 2027-2030)

Scale & Reach
  • Triple annual enrollment to 50-60 youth via added cohorts
  • Minimum 15 screenings/panels annually with livestream options
Teaching & Curriculum

Community Impact & Service Delivery

Victims of violence in the Virgin Islands face unique challenges, including limited access to mental health resources, geographic isolation, and systemic inequities. Gun violence has had a disproportionate impact on marginalized groups, creating cycles of trauma that affect families and communities, especially young people between the ages of 13-28.

The FOGV program directly addresses these challenges by using filmmaking as a social impact and educational tool. The program empowers students to process their experiences, raise awareness, and advocate for solutions through storytelling. By incorporating culturally specific practices and fostering connections with local organizations, CFEG ensures that participants have access to a holistic support system and career opportunities that positively and actively take young people out of violent environments and into the arts of filmmaking.

CFEG's connection to the community—as a school and non-profit organization for low-income areas founded and operated by Virgin Islanders in the Virgin Islands—ensures that our approach is deeply rooted in local culture and values. Public screenings bridge the gap between victims and their communities, fostering understanding and solidarity while ensuring no student becomes another obituary in the news.

Organizational Capacity & Partnerships

CFEG's strengths lie in our deep ties to the community, experienced leadership, and proven ability to deliver impactful programs. Our team has successfully implemented educational and creative arts initiatives over the past five years, combining humanities, arts, music, sports, and education with behavioral health and workforce development networking to empower our participants and students.
